Sofie Lachaert & Luc d Hanis are looking for an intern for a minimum period of three months. Sofie Lachaert and Luc d Hanis are working together for over 20 years. Life and work are inextricably intertwined. Sharing is the thread that runs through their work. Each project is a collective project, each product the result of the symbiosis of a designer and a visual artist. In their objects and furniture, as well as in their installations Lachaert and d‘Hanis simply ignore the boundaries between art, crafts and design. Their subtle interventions give everyday objects a new significance, an unexpected beauty. Creating fascinating delusions with a double bottom, meanings and functions are shifted.
The project we are working on for coming year : 'dwelling on' Starting point is the traditional house with its typical household. With respect for traditions, customs and practices several rooms and their accessories - everyday objects, furniture and interior elements - will be designed. Shifting aesthetics, meaning and function, spotlighting the beauty of the ordinary. The entire project can be divided into three main phases: PHASE 1 - Research, consisting of two sub-phases. Starting with a detailed and thorough research, both into the origin and the imagery of historical precedents, as well as into traditional techniques, production and crafts. The resulting data form the basis for the design research. In this sub-phase studies, models, experiments and prototypes are applicable.
PHASE 2 - Proceeding to manufacturing. With the use of the most appropriate techniques and materials, ideas are transformed and translated into objects. Either working in our own workshop, or using external craftsmen, virtuosity of making and perfection in execution are the keywords in this phase.
PHASE 3 - Final stage. In the final stage, all the rooms with their objects and pieces of furniture will - in their entirety and in detail - be exhibited, culminating in a solo exhibition at the MAC's Grand Hornu (2014).
